Horsemanship
There is so much more to horses than just riding! Horses require quite a bit of care and management and everything you do to care for your horse is horsemanship.
Horsemanship is a basic skill that every good rider should know, and good horsemanship is an asset to the rider and the horse. It is important that every rider know the basic riding position and have skills in handling their horse. Horsemanship includes skills like the rider’s appearance and position in the saddle and their ability to control their horse.
We educate our riders about the general care of their horse and tips on forming an unbreakable bond between horse and rider. Our facilities provides a safe and encouraging environment in the Great Australian Outdoors where riders of all ages and abilities come together to enjoy their love of horses.
Horse Husbandry
Owning a horse is a big responsibility and a long-term commitment, in terms of care, hard work and finances but immensely rewarding. There are a lot of things you need to think about in order to care for your horse properly.
Some basic horse husbandry points include:
-
- Food and Water
- Health and Welfare
- Shelter and Environment
If you’ve always wanted a horse, it’s important to understand both the financial and time commitment required for horse ownership.
Horses in their natural state are grazing animals requiring sufficient space to roam. They nibble on grass throughout the day, requiring a steady stream of fodder and water. How to care for a horse means learning not just how to groom your horse, but also how to care for all of his basic needs.
We educate our riders on the skills and commitment required to achieve the best possible outcome for you, the rider, and your horse.
Learning to Ride
Riding, as many find out quickly, is a lot harder and less glamorous than it looks from the outside looking in.
Our trainers, with decades of combined experience as stockmen and keen competitors will guide and provide you with the skills required to become a safe and competent rider, ready to embrace your journey with your new best friend…. your horse

A great experience
May I submit my personal recommendation to anyone who is interested in giving their kids a great experience, something different to the norm. Last weekend my 14yr old daughter went on a recreational ride with Andrew and a team of others and she had a blast. Was so nice to see that she had a great time, and was looked after so well by everyone. Thank you everyone, so grateful.

Thanks for the help
I always considered myself to be a pretty good rider, I had been riding since I was 8, so what else was there to learn? right?
A friend and I organised to do some mustering on a property with the owner a couple of months ago. We had a fantastic time, although when it was all said and done, the owner was having a chat with us over a couple of beers and suggested to us both that we should consider getting some horsemanship lessons because he said we were giving our horses mixed messages with our hands and legs. After doing a bit of research, we lucked on to Andrew and hooked up for a couple of lessons to see how we went.
Well, he was right. After just a couple of lessons with Andrew, we now understand what he was talking about and I must admit, riding is a lot easier when you know the right messages to give your horse. Thanks mate, we had a great time and learnt heaps.

Horse riding is a relaxing and enjoyable pastime, although as those of us who know, it can be a very expensive past time as well. You should think very carefully before embarking on a journey to own your own horse. Our horse husbandry sessions are a fantastic way to acquaint yourself with the responsibilities and associated costs of owning a horse.
At Abbwell Equine Services, we offer you the opportunity to “try before you buy” utilising one of the beautiful horses available on site before embarking on your own horse ownership journey.
Safety is a very important part of owning / riding a horse. Before any sessions are commenced, we will complete a thorough safety review and ensure not only your safety, but also your total enjoyment of the experience
Finally, before choosing how you would like to start your horse riding journey with us, we ask all clients to complete the “Introduction to Horse Riding and Horse Husbandry” session. This allows us to assess your current rising skills and tailor your sessions to you.
