The Transformative Power of Equine-Assisted Counselling
Equine Assisted Counselling… More than Horseplay
Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or facing challenges that seem too difficult to overcome? Are you seeking a therapeutic approach that goes beyond traditional, office-based talk therapy? Equine Assisted Counselling is a powerful, evidence-based method that fosters emotional well-being through meaningful interactions with horses. At The Abbwell Group, we offer more than just time spent with horses—we provide a transformative space for healing, personal growth, and resilience-building.
More than Horseplay
The magic of equine-assisted therapy lies in its experiential nature, combining cognitive-behavioural techniques with physical activity. Horses, as empathetic and highly sensitive animals, are able to reflect our emotional states, making them perfect companions for this therapeutic journey. At The Abbwell Group, you don’t just interact with these majestic creatures; you work towards establishing bonds, learning from them, and tapping into a unique form of emotional healing.
Research has shown that Equine Assisted Counselling can be beneficial in treating a wide range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and behavioural problems. Horses offer non-judgmental interactions, which can help to build self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation.
Unveiling The Benefits
- Enhances Self-awareness and Emotional Intelligence: The intuitive nature of horses helps clients become more aware of their own emotions. When a person is calm and focused, the horse will be too. This direct feedback system encourages the development of emotional intelligence, fostering a deeper understanding of oneself.
- Boosts Confidence and Self-esteem: Learning to interact and communicate with a creature as large and powerful as a horse can have a dramatic effect on self-esteem. The very act of leading a horse around an arena, for example, instils a sense of control and accomplishment, thereby enhancing self-confidence.
- Promotes Mindfulness and Stress Reduction: Horses live in the present, unaffected by past regrets or future anxieties. As clients work with these animals, they learn to do the same, promoting mindfulness and reducing stress.
- Facilitates Trauma Healing: Equine-assisted therapy has shown significant success in treating PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. The non-judgmental interaction with horses provides a safe space for clients to process their experiences and start healing.
- Enhances Communication and Social Skills: The relationship between horses and humans is based on non-verbal communication. Clients learn how to express themselves better and understand non-verbal cues, improving their interpersonal skills.
- Provides a Nurturing Environment for Personal Growth: Horses do not judge or hold grudges, offering a unique sense of unconditional acceptance. This allows clients to explore their vulnerabilities and promotes personal growth.

Great rapport with my son
Have been desperate to get these sessions as I have been recommended to look into these for my autistic and ADHD son. Hoping that with these sessions he can realise how to express emotions calmer and control aggression during his meltdowns prior to lashing out. First session and he didn’t stop asking when next one would be on way home! He didn’got stop mentioning his favourite horses. However he had a major meltdown that night due to the big morning and change of routine for him. Being hopeful this therapy is the path to one way of helping him being able to be calmer

What a safe space for my big guy 💙 grateful for another amazing year of kicking goals and emotional regulation.. After 4 years with Andrew, I barely recognise the kid I took to equine on day 1.. Do we have bad days? Occasionally, yes, have Andrew and I sat on the road with a child in chaos for 3 hours trying to get him home to safety, yessss .. but we all have our bad days.. We’ve also had amazing breakthroughs and plenty of laughs along the way .. we definitely don’t catch hands like we use to, and we wouldn’t be living our best life without the help of Andrew.. What a ray of sunshine .. always brainstorming ideas, helping me set goals, reminding me how far we’ve come and how hard I worked to get us to this point. I wouldn’t be here without the support he’s given us and the tools to change our life 💫💛 Thank you 🙏
